A former management attorney and advisor, Jan Duffy practiced employment law from 1976 to 1980 with Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue of Cleveland, Ohio, and with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe of San Francisco, both of which primarily represent larger corporations and public agencies. On a part-time basis from 1983 to 1991, she served as an employment law and advice practitioner with the San Luis Obispo County firm of Sinsheimer, Schiebelhut and Baggett, representing primarily smaller businesses and agencies.

A graduate of Stanford and Case Western Reserve Universities, Jan was a Professor of Global Strategy and Law at California Polytechnic State University from 1980 to 1997. She taught employment law, critical thinking, government policy and regulation of business, legal aspects of international business, and comparative employment law to both MBA and undergraduate students.Link to Download D. Jan has presented hundreds of seminars, speeches, and in-house training sessions, nationally and internationally, on employment, compliance, and business law topics. These include discrimination, harassment and retaliation prevention and correction, harassment, workplace investigations, privacy issues, whistle-blowing and other compliance topics. She also serves as an expert witness in employment and business cases including sex, gender, age, race, discrimination and harassment litigation, intellectual property, wrongful termination, defamation, retaliation, whistle-blowing and privacy cases.

The author of numerous articles on employment and business issues, Jan has collaborated with the American Bar Association to produce videos on the topics of workplace harassment, investigations, and employment litigation. An award-winning educator, she combines cutting-edge knowledge of employment law and practices with an enthusiasm for teaching and an understanding of effective training techniques. She is particularly skilled in teaching critical thinking in employment matters to managers for preventing litigation, for promoting a more productive and respectful workplace, and for successful management in the diverse, global business environment. A leader in the fields of workplace privacy and internal investigations, as well as the cross-border aspects of labor and employment law, Jan is a founding member of the California Association of Workplace Investigators (CAWI), now the Society of Independent Workplace Investigators (SIWI) and of Cross Border Human Resources (XBHR). From 2007 to 2010, Jan was an active member of the Society of Corporate Compliance & Ethics (SCCE).
